Semiotics

In this post I have explored what semiotics is, and why its important.

The word semiotics describes the study of symbols and signs and their use or interpretation. The word originates from the Greek word; semantikos.

Semiotics is used to analyze all aspects of life, including; logos, gestures, music, literature, expressions, advertising, clothes, film and TV. This list helps to show literally everything can be used as symbolism.

herefore, the study of visual semiotics looks at meaning-making (symbolism and metaphors), and helps us perceive and understand visual codes. We also begin to understand the placement of certain colors and elements when we begin to look into this.

Denotation and connotation are huge parts of analyzing an object.

Denotation – The description of literal meanings (what is actually there).

Connotation – Exploration of suggested meaning (what is implied by the object).

Example

How To Mend A Broken Heart

Using semiotics through my research will be hugely useful, as when studying my culture I will be able to identify any small details that may speak volumes to its people. Therefore, in my design I will be able to use symbolism to represent different areas of their culture, such as; location, music, colors, history and traditions. This will also allow me to include symbolism from more than one tribe, or religious group within my chosen culture, therefore representing as many people as I possibly can.
