Marc Jacobs AW16

During New York Fashion Weeks; Mark Jacobs Autumn Winter show in 2016, the brand showcased 65 heavily embellished, layered, dark, grunge inspired looks. Using a combination of iconic supermodels, and grunge icons such as Lady Gaga, the brand showcased a collection of familiar, but new styles – recreating old styles in a new black and grey palette, to fit the new grunge aesthetic.

This collection experimented with proportion by creating over sized, and shrunken pieces, to create an overall dramatic effect. Each design also referenced iconic Gothic characters, such as Lydia from beetle juice.

For my final piece, I am intending to create a very dark atmosphere. In order to accurately portray how miserable mental health disorders can make one feels, I am wanting to use dark, graphic and extreme techniques within the hair, makeup and costume. I feel this collection can be a great inspiration to all of these aspects.

By using a combination of over exaggerated finger waves in the hair, dark and graphic makeup techniques, and overly proportioned, and layered fashion pieces, these looks create an extremely powerful and dramatic effect. They are exactly the kind of images I am hoping to create, so I will be sure to refer back to them during my design process.
