Makeup in the 1940’s

For this task I have researched what makeup trends were around during the 1940’s, in America. This will help ensure I create a look realistic to the time, during my final assessment. It will also give me further understanding into how they created these looks.

The desired look

1940s Makeup Tutorials Books and Videos - Vintage Makeup Guides

Overall, the look that defines this decade consists of a reasonably natural face, topped with a red lip. Foundation was usually very neutral, or occasionally gave a gentle sunk-kissed tone. Some very subtle, natural color would be added to the cheeks, creating a natural, rosy glow. During this time it was popular to wear brushed, shaped brows – of a medium thickness – that were lightly shaded in with a pencil. Eye shadow was worn very sparingly with a touch of mascara, to ensure all attention was kept on the lips.

Color harmony between products started to become extremely popular during the 1940’s. Primarily, one’s hair color was used to determine what color range was best suited, but eye and outfit color was also considered. Beauty guides often advised women to color match their lips, cheeks and nails, to create an overall collected look. Regardless of a woman’s background or class, all women made huge efforts with whatever they had access too, to ensure they always looked their best.

Influences

War

During the 1940’s, the second world war had a huge impact on the fashion and beauty industry, after rationing was introduced. Wartime restrictions had a massive impact on daily life with the cosmetic industry coming as no exception. Alcohol shortages lead to a drop in the production of cologne, lack of fats and oils lead to soap rationing and due to its key part in the make up of munitions, geletaine was no longer available for cosmetic production.

Mises on Rationing and Price Controls in WW2 | Online Library of Liberty

Rationing caused a halt in the production of many cosmetic products, leading many women to experiment with household items in a bid to find alternatives rather than go without. These experiments lead to women using burnt cork for mascara, cochineal or beetroot juice for lip and cheek stain, and even using gravy browning for a fake tanner. Many women also began to use any form of old makeup they may find in second hand shops – this even included the daily use of theater makeup.

Packaging was also affected during the period of rationing, after war efforts called for the ration of materials like metal and plastic – as they were needed in the production of items for battle. This meant any cosmetics that were produced often came in cardboard packaging. Many cosmetic companies used this information to help support the war effort, providing their factory spaces as places for production of first aid kits and dye markers for the US Navy. Revlon was one of the first cosmetic companies to take this step.

Some cosmetic products, like lipstick, just managed to survive the rationing process. During the 1940’s, in the rise of war,  lipstick was worn as a sign of patriotism, and was used by women to symbolize their femininity even while carrying out the ‘men’s work’. Brands embraced selling patriotism, by selling many shades of red cosmetic products. Elizabeth Arden even released a collection in 1941 named victory red, with its tagline reading “Victory red… a beautiful red to brighten today and challenge tomorrow”. Women in the US loved the symbolic meaning behind wearing their red lipstick, so held mass protests against the War Production Board’s plan to ration this product, which eventually led to its survival from rationing. However, women in the UK weren’t so lucky, and had their lipstick rationed from them.

The end of the war did not immediately signal the end of rationing, but items slowly but surely returned to the shelves. Eager women would que for hours after the release of cosmetic products back into stores, in order to get their fix of what they had missed so dearly.

Film stars

Visiting the cinema was a popular way to spend an evening in the 1940’s, with an average weekly movie attendance of around 80 million people! Movie star glamour was hugely admired, and copied by women all over the world. Especially now that movies had begun to be shown in color more regularly, women were able to mimic the colors they saw on screen, as well as the look itself.

An extremely popular trend of this decade was set by actress Joan Crawford. In the late 1930’s Joan appeared in a Max Factor campaign sporting a rounded lip. This look later became known as the hunter’s bow, or the smear. This campaign also led Joan to be credited for making arched brows more popular.

Magazines

Film magazines, such as; Photo play and Modern Screen, showed the realities of life as a Hollywood star. These magazines would use movie stars to help document current trends in fashion and beauty, and even explore what they believed what the future trends may be. Furthermore, these magazines would show everyday women at work looking extremely glamorous, in addition to having focused fashion and beauty pages. These images set potentially unrealistic beauty standards for working women across America.

Foundation

In the 1940’s, foundation shades were designed either to be natural or to add a subtle, healthy glow. The natural sun kissed look was extremely popular.

Most foundation products were available in cake form, mainly with a matte finish. However, some had a light, sheen finish.

Max-Factor’s pan-cake was ultimately the most popular foundation product of this decade. Initially designed for the film industry, actresses fell in love with its flawless finish and began wearing the product off screens. Max Factor seized the opportunity, that everyone wanted to look like their favorite movie stars, by releasing pan cake to the public in the late 1930’s. Max-factor followed their previous success of pan-cake when releasing pan-stick, another  product initially designed for on screen wear, to the public in the 40’s. This cream foundation came in a  tube, making it extremely easy to apply, leading it to major success.

Powder

Loose and pressed powders were available for setting foundations and eliminating any unwanted shine. Compact pressed powders would be used to touch up on the go, after everyday women began to see film stars apply their makeup in public – on films. This gave the everyday woman the confidence to do so.

Eyebrows

Eyebrow pencils were used to shape and define the eyebrows after grooming them with a comb. Pencils came in black and brown shades, and pomades were also available for those women with thicker, and harder to tame brows. However, many women used Vaseline to tame and shape their brows, as a cheaper alternative.

1940s Make Up - Oh So Delightful

The brows would usually be combined into an arched or rounded shape, making them much more defined than those of previous decades, but they were not left overgrown, too wide or excessively full.

The Most Popular Brow Shapes by the Decade

Eye shadow

Wartime caused a huge halt in the production of many cosmetics, making products like eye shadow extremely hard to came by. This lead many women to create home made solutions, such as; burning a candle under a saucer to create a residue that could be mixed with Vaseline to create a grayish toned eye shadow.

Colors were limited meaning muted colors like grey and brown’s were most popular, however sometimes greens, violets and blues could also be found. After the end of World War Two, many new colors made an appearance on the shelves, especially in the evergreen shades of brown, green, violet and blue. Fancier colors like gold were also introduced and were a popular choice for evening wear.

Eye shadow would be applied to the lid with one’s finger and then blended up towards the brow. This could be taken slightly beyond the outer corner of the eye but there was no dramatic wing, like we see in many glamour makeups in the later decades. Additionally, women tended to only wear one color eye shadow, there was no darker color in the crease, or highlight in the inner corners or on the brow bone.

Eye liner

During the war, eye liner was used in small amounts, only to help enhance the lash line. Rationing meant eyebrow pencils would be double purposed, and used for liners – or vice versa.

The end of the war called for a more dramatic, stronger line behind the lashes. Additionally, extending the line slightly to create an almond shape was also becoming popular. This continued into the 50’s, where it was known as the doe eye look.

Mascara

Eyelash products during this decade were available in shades of black, brown and blue. Block/cake and cream mascara were the most popular formulas. Mascara was mainly applied to the top lashes, but was occasionally applied on the lower lashes too.

Lipstick

Red was the prominent colour of the 1940’s, symbolizing patriotism and femininity. Various shades of red appeared throughout the decade, with undertones including; blue, brown, orange and pink. Dark and brick reds were the most popular during this time.

After the war ended, many new, brighter shades were introduced – like pinky reds. Women yearned for brighter colors after the dark, dull lives they had lived through the war times so these new shades became extremely popular.

Lip pencils also began to spring into importance during this decade.

Lipsticks were often matte, meaning women had to apply petroleum jelly over the top if they desired a shiner finish. There were a few specialist products designed for this use, one of the products available was known as ‘lip pomade’ and was made by Max Factor.

Cosmetics and Skin: Max Factor (1930-1945)

Furthermore, the hunters bow- a deep, rounded lip- rose to popularity during this decade. This trend is said to be created by actress Joan Crawford. Lipstick applicators were created to help make it easier to achieve a flawless, full, rounded lip.

Rouge

During the 1940’s, rouge was available in cream and dry formulas. Pressed powders often came in small cardboard pots, or in compacts. Peachy, coral and pinky tones were the most popular during this decade.

Rouge would have been lightly applied, directly on the apples of the cheeks and then blended out to create a natural glow.

This product could also be applied around the face to create a light contour. During the period of rationing many women even applied lip sticks to their cheeks in a bid to replicate rouge.

Nail polish

Nail polish was a staple in many women’s beauty routines during the 1940’s. Reds were the most popular colour, but polishes in darker green and gold shades were also worn often.

Generally, the colour of a woman’s nails would match her rouge and lipstick shade. Brands began to make this co-ordination process easier, when releasing collections of matching products including lipsticks, rogues and nail polish every time they released new shades.

Stockings

During wartime, nylon stockings were in short supply as nylon was needed for production towards the war effort. This led to women experimenting more with makeup to find a solution to this problem by creating the illusion of stockings. Women used leg makeup – originally designed to create a tanned appearance- along with makeup pencils- to create the illusion of a seam line up the back of the leg. Women who didn’t have access to leg makeup would often improvise using gravy browning or watered down coffee on their legs in a bid to replicate this effect.

Hair in the 1940’s

For this task, I have researched in to the hair trends of the 1940s, for men and women. I have also explored some different products and accessories that may have been used.

Women

During the 1940’s, classic hairstyles like rolls, curls and waves were extremely popular. For this task I have explored the many ways these styles may have been combined, and who or what had an influence on setting the trends of this decade.

The 1940’s was one of the first decades with many different popular styles, unlike times before where everyone tried to look the same. Hair styles began to vary hugely between each individual person, and there seemed to be no particular favorite. This marked the start of an evolution, where women were becoming more confident in expressing their personal, individual taste.

Women's 1940s Hairstyles: An Overview - Hair & Makeup Artist Handbook

However, even though styles varied they were all very soft and feminine, and were always dressed away from the face. Side parts seemed to be a favorite feature for all women across this decade, but middle parts were occasionally sported.

Older women tended to stick with what they were familiar with by continuing to create the short, waved styles that were popular through the 30’s.

What Were Women's Hairstyles Like In the 1930s?

Influences

Film starts

Actresses such as; Betty Grable, Anna Neagle, Veronica Lake, Dorothy Lamour and Rita Hayworth, had huge influences on the beauty trends in the 1940’s. Their work helped provide an escape from the everyday realities of war, making women want to be like them, and what easier way to achieve this than to mirror their style.

Classic Film • The 1940's • 1940-1949 • Fashion History Movies Music

Government Officials in America recognized the influence these women had on the public, and took it to their advantage. Long hair was extremely dangerous in factory environments, so in a bid to tackle this problem, officials reached out to actresses such as Veronica Lake, asking them to cut their long locks and set new trends by debuting shorted styles.

War

Wartime had a huge influence over how women began to wear their hair. Working more practical jobs, in factories and the armed forces, women opted to wearing their hair in ways they were safer and more practical. This included women cutting their hair shorter, or wearing up dos.

Women in World War II

Those in the armed forces had rules to follow, for example their hair had to be worn off the collar while on duty. This led many women to opt for cutting their hair shorter, making it quicker and easier to style.

Post-war

Once wartime came to an end, women wanted to embrace what they had missed so dearly. As men returned from war, many women returned to their more domesticated jobs, leaving behind the practical work they undertook during the war. Furthermore, rationing came to an end bringing on the release of newer, more luxurious hair makeup and fashion products.

Hair started to become much looser and less structured after war, as victory rolls and pompadours took a backseat while sleek, waved hair took over popularity.

Elements

Curls and waves

Unlike the defined waves of the 30’s, women sported a much softer wave during the 1940s. Wavy hair was worn as an everyday style, while curls were saved for special events, to dress up.

Bone straight hair was extremely unfashionable during this period, meaning the hair was always set. Setting the hair also helped to achieve the volume and lift needed to create certain styles that were popular at this time.

Most women would set their hair at home by creating pin curls, or using rags to create a barrel curl. However, richer women would visit a hairdresser for a set or perm.

Rolls

Rolls are one of the defining factors for hair during this decade. They were a flexible element of any hairstyle, allowing women to shape and position their rolls how and wherever they wanted to.

What Were the Most Popular Hairstyles Of the 1940s?

Rolls could be worn on the top, side, along the forehead or nape, meaning they were very versatile.

Furthermore, rolls could be  worn in up dos, or with the hair down, and could be worn either symmetrical or unsymmetrical. The shape and stability of a roll could be helped by backcombing the hair, and by securing the hair with grips ensuring it stays in place all day.

Paige-boy

This term is used to describe a smooth style with a curled under roll, around the back and sides of the head. Length was needed to create this style, so it was a popular choice among those with mid-long hair who didn’t want to cut it shorter.

Veronica Lake was known, at the time, as being the face that made this style so popular.

Victory rolls

Rolls had been a part of 1940’s hair since the start of the decade, and victory rolls were a very specific kind.Opposite to the pageboy, the term victory roll describes a tight roll, upwards around the back of the hair. Many women would use an old stocking to help them achieve this roll, tying the stocking at the front of the head to look like a headband.

Fringes

In the 1940’s, hair was dressed off the face. If a woman did happen to have a fringe it was usually pinned to one side or incorporated into whatever style she was sporting. The fringe was never just lest to lay across the face.

Pompadour

The pompadour is a style that stands high on the forehead, with the hair going back, away from the face. Essentially, a pompadour is a huge roll  that stood high off the face and could be worn either smooth, half shaved or fully waved.

Afro Caribbean hair

During the 1940’s, the vast majority of the African American community’s women would straighten their hair, in a bid to fit in with the society around them -as natural Afro hair didn’t begin to be embraced until the 1960’s!

To straighten their hair, women would first apply a protective pomade to their hair. Next they would run a heated metal comb through their hair, turning tight curls into glossy straight hair. The hair would ten be dressed into rolls and waves, too following typical 1940’s style.

Braids

Braids were popular thought this decade, and hair pieces were often worn by those women with shorter hair. Hair pieces were usually worn to match the hair’s natural color, but some women occasionally wore contrasting colors, or used a scarf within their braid to add a colorful detail.

Grips, combs and slides.

Hair grips were not in mass production during war time meaning women highly treasured what they did have. During the 40’s, grips were shiny and were made to be worn visibly. Women sometimes added ribbons and bows to their grips for extra detail.

Snoods

The term snood describes a crochet bag, that was often homemade, used to keep the back of the hair neat and tidy. In snoods, the hair could be styled in rolls, soft curls, or pin curls. Factory and field workers often wore their hair in a snood, to keep it clean and away from their face. Sometimes women made snoods with excess dress materials, so they matched their outfits perfectly.

Setting the hair

During wartime many products were inaccessible, due to rationing. This meant women had to make do with what they had, using products like beer or sugar water to create homemade setting lotion.

Pipe cleaners, rags or pin curls were often used to set the hair, by lower and middle class women, in an attempt to create these styles at home. Women of higher class would visit the hair salon for a longer lasting result.

Men

During the 1940’s, men generally had perfectly groomed hair. They achieved this look by visiting the barber often. Men’s hair from this decade is fairly simple, and mainly consists of hair that is long on top, and shorter on the sides.

Conservative cuts

Most men wore one general style in the 40’s, short on the sides and long on top. Hair was never parted through the middle as this was seen as feminine. Instead, the top would be smoothed back with pomade, or parted to the side and combed over into a slight wave.

In the early 40’s, hair was trimmed neatly into a single wave and polished with oils or pomades to add shine. Alternatively, hair may be rounded or smoothed on the top.

However, in the later years of the 1940’s, styles began to gain more height, and waves. Layers of waves; loose or sculpted, and curls, began to rise to popularity. These looks required minimal products, pushing the oily look out of fashion. The later look was much looser, yet often took more effort to style and maintain.

Slick back

The slick back style was created by combining oils or pomades through wet hair. Often this style would be slicked backwards, but may sometimes be given a side part with a small wave at the front.

Waves

Waved styles were created by loading the hair with styling cream or liquid, then combing it through creating a very defined side part. The hair was then combed up, to the side creating a side-swoop.

Some men did decide to grow their hair out, allowing them to slick it back with oils, but this was not the most popular option as it was harder to maintain.

Men working in the military services had to follow strict rules for appearance. These men were often required to cut their hair very short, making it much easier, and quicker to style and maintain.

Storyline

For this task I have summarized some of the main events from the 2001 movie, Pearl harbor. This will make it much easier for me to refer back to the film, its characters and events, during my further research tasks. It also helps explain the film to any of my readers that may not have seen it.

Pearl Harbor, is a Film directed by Michael Bay, released in 2001. The movie is based on the true events of the attack on Pearl Harbor, in Oahu- Hawaii, on December 7th 1941.

Pearl Harbor movie review & film summary (2001) | Roger Ebert

The film focuses on two main characters, Raif and Danny, who are lifelong friends. They shared a childhood as neighbors, and had a passion for flying from a very young age, so as soon as they could they joined the American Army Air force together. During their medical assessments Raif meets a nurse, Evelyn. She recognizes he is dyslexic, but passes him anyways as she has seen first hand what happens when a pilot loses his wings- through her father- and doesn’t want Raif to feel that pain.

Raif was eager to enter into war, so at the first opportunity he volunteered to fight alongside England’s Royal Air Force, in their attempts to victory across Europe, during the Second World War. Raif is immediately faced with the harsh realities of war, when during his induction after arrival at England one of the first conversions he overhears is “only eleven returned sir, that means we’ve lost two”. A few weeks later, Raif ignored warnings that there was a problem with his plane, when eager to protect his troops from a German air strike, the problem causes an oil leak leading to a fire inside his cockpit, meaning Raif’s plane is shot from the sky, and he is presumed dead – leaving behind his beloved love interest, Evelyn, and his brother Danny. Evelyn feels guilt over Raif’s death, as she believes it never would have happened if she didn’t pass his medical.

Bonding over their grief, Evelyn and Danny became extremely close and before long found comfort only in each other. To begin with, the two are reluctant to admit their feelings as they feel extremely guilty, however their peers encourage them to move on together, as it has been months since Raif was presumed dead. Just as the couple decide they can move on together, Raif returns from the dead, creating an uncomfortable and confusing love triangle. Understandably hurt, Raif picks a fight with Danny, and no matter how hard Danny tries to explain it seems their brotherhood has come to an end.

Alongside the focus of the love triangle between Raif, Evelyn and Danny, we also get an insight into Betty and Red’s relationship, which moves fairly quickly, as by this point the two are engaged. More importantly, we are shown the Government’s response to warnings about the attack on pearl harbor. Multiple warnings were received, but they were all brushed off by generals, as they believed it was more important to focus on the war in Europe. They believed there were no concerns at Pearl Harbor as torpedoes could not be used, due to the shallow nature of the water bed, and they believed they had enough resources to give them plenty of warning for an airstrike. Little did they know the Japanese had been working hard to tackle this problem, allowing them to carry out a totally surprise attack. When a warning was officially sent to the fleet at pearl harbor, after a Jap transmission had been intercepted, it did not arrive in time to prepare the Us navy, in fact the message was not received until after the attack had been completed, and the Japs had recalled their forces.

Betty and Red

On December 7th, at around 8 am, the men are awoken by the sounds of explosions- the beginning of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Raif and Danny realize they can’t afford to lose each other again, so put their differences behind them and team up to enter into battle.

In a huge battle scene we are shown the true, harsh realities of war. Each main character shows a different perspective of those who are fighting in the war, and how it may affect their lives. During the battle Betty dies after suffering fatal injury, re-introducing the subject of grief, and showing how hard it would have been for all those that knew her to carry on as if nothing had happened – but they had too, as war strops for nothing. We are also shown the discussions between the president, his advisers and the heads of the military divisions and are introduced to how guilty they felt for dismissing the warnings they received. Then, the call of congress and declaration of war against Japan, leading to America’s entry into the second world war.

Raif and Danny’s efforts to protect their peers in the battle of Pearl Harbor earns them both a promotion to Captain, and an invitation to a Top Secret mission, as they are among the small percentage of men left with real combat experience, after the huge amount of deaths during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Just before the team departs, Evelyn has a quiet word with Raif. She explains she will always have love for him but had to move on after what she thought was his death. Furthermore, Evelyn asked Raif to protect Danny with all he can, and make sure they both come home, as she is pregnant with Danny’s baby – but he is yet to know.

Initially, Raif tries to talk Danny out of attending the mission, in order to ensure his safety, but Danny is having none of it. He wants to be there with Raif, to make sure they don’t lose each other again. So, on April 22, 1942, the US Hornet sets sail toward Tokyo, to complete a bombing on the city, flying Army bombers from Navy ships, for the first time ever. Evelyn asks another officer to repay her for saving his life, by getting her into the transmissions office so she has first news if anything goes wrong – and as much as he is reluctant to do so he eventually agrees to sneak her in.

“We may lose the battle, but we will win this War.” This quote helps to clearly show how dangerous this mission really is. The men are ordered to target Military bases, aircraft and tank factories, and are even told to aim for the largest possible military target if they had to crash land. On April 18, 1942 the men were sent into combat, way earlier than planned, after their position was compromised by a Japanese patrol.

Historical context

For this task, I have researched in to the history of the attack on Pearl Harbor, allowing me to familiarize myself with the real events of this attack. This will allow me to analyse the film more thoroughly, as I can compare the story line to the true events of this day. This will further, allow me to create the most realistic effects when it comes to my SFX makeup assessment.

Naval Station Pearl Harbor, Hawaii

The attack on Pearl Harbor refers to the unprovoked, surprise aerial strike carried out by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service, on the US Pacific Fleet, at Pearl Harbor, in Oahu – Hawaii. On December 7th 1941, the Japanese attacked at 7.55 am, just as the American military were waking, therefore, ensuring they had no fair chance at fighting back, or beating the Japanese. The attack lasted one hour, fifteen minutes, but caused extensive damage to the American military forces. During the attack; 19 US Navy ships – including 8 battleships were destroyed or damaged, 350 Aircraft were destroyed or damaged, there were 2403 deaths – including 68 civilians, and there were 1247 surviving casualties. USS Arizona, a Navy ship that was destroyed in this attack, remains sunk to this day, with its crew still on board- accounting for around half of the fatalities caused by this tragic strike.

USS Arizona Memorial - Wikipedia
Here is an image on USS Arizona today, the shipwreck is now held as a memorial to all of those lots in this battle.

The Japanese strike force consisted of 353 aircraft, launched from 4 heavy carriers. This included; 40 torpedo planes, 131 dive bombers, 103 level bombers, and 79 fighter jets, as well as 2 heavy cruisers, 2 light cruisers, 35 submarines, 9 oilers, 2 battleships and 11 destroyers. During the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Japanese lost 29 aircraft, and 5 submarines, had one soldier taken prisoner, and around 129 of their own were killed. Even Though the Imperial Japanese Army Air force caused extensive damage to the US Armed forces during this attack, the US bounced back extremely quickly, carrying out a retaliation strike only six months later, in June 1942. On this occasion the US Carrier fleet was sent to attack Japanese forces, sinking four aircraft carriers, in what is now known as the Battle of Midway.

The attack on Pearl Harbor led American president, Franklin.D.Roosevelt to call upon congress and declare war on Japan, on December 8th, resulting in America’s entry into World War Two. This further led Japan to ally with Germany and Italy. However, the Americans eventually defeated the Japanese Empire in August of 1945.

Weapons

For this task, I have researched the different weapons that would have been used during the attack on pearl harbor, to give me a deeper understanding into the realities of this war, allowing me to create the most realistic Special effects makeup look possible, for my Unit 9 Final assessment.

The Japanese

The attack on Pearl Harbor, was a surprise aerial attack, carried out by the Japanese Air force. Therefore, the weapons used by the Japanese were all aircraft based.

The most numerous plane used by the Japanese, during this attack, was the B5N2 Bomber

This aircraft carried 30 caliber machine guns on its tail,  and during wave one was used to drop either; Type 1, Model 2 Torpedoes (1847lb) or Type 99, Model 5, Ordinary (anti-ship) bombs (1763lb). During the second wave, these planes dropped; Type 98 land bombs (551lb), or type 97 land bombs (132lb).

The second plane they used was the AICHI D3AI, which carried 20 mm cannons onboard.

These planes were used to drop Type 98 land bombs (551lb) during the first wave, and; Type 99, Model 1 Ordinary (Anti-ship) bombs (551lb), during the second.

The A6M21 Zero was also flown, in much smaller quantities.

Americans

As this attack was a complete surprise to the American military forces present at Pearl Harbor, most of the weapons used were fired from the ground. By the time anyone may have made it to an airfield, if they hadn’t already been killed or injured on their way, would have found most of the aircraft had already been damaged or destroyed by the Japanese aerial attack. Therefore, men had to use rifles, machine guns, and any heavier artillery they could find, to fight back as best they could.

Rifles

At the time, the standard issue weapon for the American Army and Marines was the rifle. The three most popular were all 30 caliber rifles; the Springfield bolt-action rifle, the Semi-automatic model 1 (M1-Grand), and the lightweight M1 Carbine.

The Springfield bolt-action rifle was the hardest to operate, and had to be reloaded after every shot, which was highly un-useful in a large scale battle, like Pearl Harbor.

However, the M1-Grand was very easy to operate, and consisted of a 15 round magazine, allowing it to fire a shower of bullets upon its target. This was the first ever standard issue, semi-automatic, military rifle.

Additionally, the M1 carbine was also easy to fire, and was made in 15-30 round models.

Machine guns

The Thompson sub machine gun (the Tommy Gun), was the first ever fully automatic gun, that shot up to 500 rounds per minute.

The M3A1 Automatic machine gun (the grease gun) had a short barrel, was light weight, and was .45 caliber.

The Browning Automatic rifle (the B.A.R) shot 30 caliber bullets, which could penetrate through armor. These were rare as they were very light weight (only 40lb).

Artillery

The 2.36 inch Shoulder fired rocket launcher (the Bazooka) was among the few weapons that could have been used to target airplanes directly, rather than trying to take out the pilots.

Additionally, the Howitzer was a short range, lightweight cannon that could have been easily broken down – allowing groups of men to carry it.
Furthermore, the 31 tonne, 120mm cannon, was a truck towed anti-aircraft gun that could be used to identify and attack targets up to 60,000 feet away.

Injuries at Pearl Harbor

For this task, I have researched in to some injuries that may have occurred as a result of the attack on Pearl Harbor, and how they would look in real life. Studding real cases of these injuries will help me familiarize myself with the reality of these situations, allowing me to achieve an extremely realistic outcome, when it comes to re-creating these injuries with Special Effects Makeup – in my final assessment.

Warning- This document contains the study of injuries that may have occurred during the attack on pearl harbor, and contains images of real injuries. Some people may find this content upsetting.

During the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, almost 20 American ships, and over 300 aircraft were destroyed. The mass destruction of land and possessions caused around 2,403 sailors, soldiers and civilians to lose their lives, after suffering horrific injuries. Only around 1000 of those injured during this attack were lucky enough to survive.

Among the many injuries inflicted by this attack, victims may have suffered; Burns, Bullet wounds, Shrapnel injuries, Cuts, Bruises, Scrapes, Breaks, fractures, traumatic amputation, Hypothermia, and drowning.

Burns

During the attack on Pearl harbor, burns would have been suffered as a result of explosions, or heavy gunfire, from aerial attack. Burns, from first to fourth degree, may have been suffered after a person came in to contact with fire, or sparks, after a bomb had been dropped on the area.

Chemical burns may also have been inflicted on those near any kind of strong acidic substance, when it was hit by open fire. A chemical burn is much less charred than an open fire burn, and looks more like melting skin.

Bullet wounds

Any person at Pearl Harbor at the time of the attack, was at extremely high risk of suffering a bullet wound. Not only could these people be in the firing line of the Japanese aircraft, but the panic and fear they would be feeling, meant they would not have been paying full attention to their surroundings – and could have potentially even been shot by an American sailor, or soldier who was attempting to fight back at the Japs.

Entry bullet wounds

Exit bullet wounds

Shrapnel injury

Anyone near the site of an explosion would have been susceptible to receiving a shrapnel injury. Shrapnel is a term used to describe fractions of a bomb, shell or any other object that may be thrown out by an explosion. If someone is near the site of an explosion they are highly likely to be striked by some form of shrapnel, causing them harm.

Cuts

Many of the people at Pearl Harbor would have sustained cuts when trying to escape the attack. As previously mentioned, when acting in panic we do not tend to pay much attention to our surroundings, therefore leaving ourselves much more vulnerable to injury. Attempting to escape attack may have led some people to fall, or run into sharp or blunt objects, which could have caused open lacerations.

Bruises

When trying to run, or hide from the attack, people would have been likely to fall over, or run into things, causing bruising. Bruising will also form around most other, more severe injuries, as a result of trauma to the site.

Scrapes

People were also likely to trip or stumble, when running to find shelter during this attack. This means many people would have suffered with scrapes and scratches all over their body. These injuries often occur as a result of falling in to a blunt, or rough object or surface.

Breaks and fractures

As a result of falling over, or impact from gunshots and explosions, many people would have suffered from broken, fractured or dislocated bones. These injuries cause extreme bruising, and may also create an open wound.

Traumatic amputation

Many people would have suffered traumatic amputation, as the result of explosions, or after becoming trapped under objects  while trying to escape or hide.

Hypothermia

For the members of the armed forces that were onboard the ships at pearl harbor, while they were targeted and sunk, many men decided to try and save themselves by jumping into the water. This water would have been cold, and after long periods of struggling in the water, men may have begun to suffer hypothermia. Hypothermia is a medical emergency that occurs when the body is losing temperature faster than it can produce it, causing burns, or discoloration of the skin.

Drowning

As mentioned above, many men would have attempted to escape death by jumping off of sinking ships, into the water. If not a result from extreme exhaustion, drowning could also be caused by getting trapped inside, or underneath a shipwreck – meaning you would have been unable to reach the water’s surface. Drowning is the process of respiratory impairment, from submersion of liquid, and although not always fatal, most of those who suffered from drowning during this attack, would have passed as a result.

The circulatory system

For this task, I have conducted research in to the body’s circulatory system. This research will help me gain a deeper understanding in to how the blood flows around the body, allowing me to create the most realistic wounds possible, in my final Special Effects Makeup assessment.

The circulatory system is a system consisting of the heart, blood vessels (arteries, veins and capillaries), and blood. This system is responsible for transporting blood around the body, ensuring tissues receive oxygen and nutrients, and the removal waste products.

The Circulatory System: Its 4 Main Parts and How They Work - Owlcation

How it works;

Step 1 – Oxygen enters the bloodstream, via tiny membranes in the lungs, that absorb oxygen when we inhale.

Step 2 – As the body uses up this oxygen, and processes nutrients in the body, it creates carbon dioxide as a waste product.

Step 3 – This product is then returned to the lungs, and expelled when we exhale.

Constant pressure from the heart and valves, through the body, allows this system to work. This pressure ensures veins can carry blood to the heart, and allows arteries to carry blood away from it. There are three types of circulation, called;

Pulmonary circulation – Where oxygen-depleted blood is carried away from the heart, to the lungs, and then returned back into the heart.

Systemic circulation – Carries oxygenated blood away from the heart, to the rest of the body.

Coronary circulation – Provides the heart with oxygenated blood, allowing it to function properly.

There are many conditions that may potentially affect the effectiveness of the circulatory system. These include;

Peripheral arterial disease – A disease where blood flow in the arteries of the leg is restricted, due to a buildup of plaque in the arteries.

Arteriosclerosis – Where a plaque build up in the blood vessel becomes calcified (hardens) causing the arteries to become less flexible. This leads to high blood pressure, and potentially can cause strokes, and heart or kidney damage.

Atherosclerosis: Causes, Symptoms, Risks & Tests

Heart attacks (myocardial infarction) – A blockage of blood flow into the heart muscle, causing the death of muscle tissue in the heart.

Heart Attack: What Is It, Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

Angina – Where the heart muscle doesn’t receive enough blood, causing ‘crushing’ chest pain, fatigue, nausea and shortness of breath.

Mitral valve conditions – Known as either mitral valve prolapse, stenosis or regurgitation, these conditions cause oxygenated blood in the heart to flow backwards, slower, or describe is where the blood flow is constricted.

Mitral Valve Disease | Temple Health

Arrhythmia or dysrhythmia – This term describes an abnormal heart rate.

Aortic disease – A group of conditions affecting the aorta. An example of this is an aneurysm – where the aorta weakens, accusing it to bulge out.

Heritable Thoracic Aortic Disease: Single Gene Disorders Predisposing to Thoracic Aortic Aneurysms and Acute Aortic Dissections - ScienceDirect

Signs of poor circulation may include ;

Chest pain, Dizziness, Fatigue, Feeling faint, Shortness of breath, Heart palpitations, A slowed or rapid heart beat, Pain, weakness, swelling or numbness in the limbs,

Symptoms specific to conditions, such as Peripheral Arterial Disease include;

Leg cramping – during activity, and rest, Coldness in the feet or legs, A change of color in the leg, Change of nail color or thickness, Hair loss on the legs or feet, Ulcers on the legs or feet that do not heal.

Components

The heart

Anatomy of a Human Heart

When fully grown, the heart is around the size of two adult hands. The heart is one of the most important organs in the body – as you can not survive without it – and it sits just off center of the chest. The heart’s consistent pumping is what keeps the circulatory system running which, in turn, keeps us alive.

The heart wall consists of three layers, known as;

The epicardium – Outer layer

The Myocardium – Middle (muscular) layer

The Endocardium – Inner layer

The heart’s chambers are extremely important for the circulatory process. These chambers are known as; The right and left atrium (the upper chambers), and the right and left ventricle (the lower chambers). Right and left atrium are responsible for receiving blood from the veins, while the right and left ventricles push blood back out through the body, away from the heart, through the arteries. This means the ventricles have much stronger myocardial layers, than the atrium.

The Arteries

Artery - Wikipedia

Made of three layers, known as Tunica intima (inner layer), tunica media (middle), and tunica externa (outer layer), the arteries are responsible for transporting blood away from the heart. The tunica media is the thickest of these layers, and changes size to regulate the blood flow.

There are three main types of arteries that get smaller, as they branch further away from the heart.

Elastic arteries;

The aorta and pulmonary arteries are known as elastic arteries. These arteries receive blood straight from the heart, and must be elastic to allow them to accommodate for the surge and contractions, as blood pushes through with each heart beat.

The Aorta, is the largest and most important artery in the body, responsible for carrying blood directly from the heart, into the circulatory system.

The Pulmonary artery is responsible for carrying blood from the right ventricle, to the lungs. This artery is the only artery that can carry de-oxygenated blood.

Muscular arteries

Muscular arteries are responsible for the movement of blood, between the elastic arteries and the rest of the body. These arteries are made of smooth muscle that expands and contracts as the blood flows. The femoral and coronary arteries are among the most important arteries in this category.

Arterioles;

Arterioles are the smallest of arteries, and are responsible for moving blood from the muscular arteries, to the capillaries.

Structure and Function of Blood Vessels | Anatomy and Physiology II

Capillaries

Capillaries Overview & Function | What are Capillaries? - Video & Lesson Transcript | Study.com

The capillaries are responsible for connecting the arteries to the veins. The number of capillaries is dependent on the amount of material exchange in an area. For example, skeletal muscle, liver and kidneys contain many capillaries, as their functions require large amounts of oxygen and nutrients, compared to the corneal of the eye, which consists of no capillaries.

Veins

Blood Vessels

Veins are responsible for the movement of blood, back into the heart. Blood moves through the capillaries  to the venules ( the  smallest veins ) and then travels its way back to the heart. Just like arteries, the veins get larger in size, the closer they get to the heart, and are also made of three layers, known as ; tunica intima, tunica media, and tunica externa.

However, veins have much less smooth muscle and connective tissue, the walls of veins are much thinner, and they have less pressure, and can hold much more blood, than the arteries.

At any one time, around 70% of our body’s total blood supply is in our veins.

Valves

Common heart valve disorders and their treatment

Valves are small pieces of tissue, found in the veins and the heart, that help to ensure blood is always flowing in the right direction.

Valves can be found in the medium and large veins, in order to help keep the blood flowing toward the heart.  Valves, found in veins in the arms and legs, are there to ensure gravity does not pull blood in the wrong direction (away from the heart).

The heart consists of four valves that help to separate the heart’s chambers. There are known as;

Tricuspid valve – Separates the right atrium, from the right ventricle.

Material or Bicuspid valves – Separates the left ventricle, from the left atrium.

The Semilunar valves (Pulmonic or pulmonary, and Aortic valves)

Pulmonic or pulmonary valve – Separates the pulmonary artery from the right ventricle.

Aortic valve – Seperates the aorta from the left ventricle.

The blood

The blood is made up of four main contents, plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.

What is Blood? | OneBlood

Plasma;

Trials of Plasma From Recovered Covid-19 Patients Have Begun | WIRED

Around 55% of the blood is made up of plasma. This is the component that makes the blood a liquid.

Plasma is responsible for transporting blood cells around the body (through the circulatory system) as well as carrying hormones, nutrients, antibodies and waste products around the body.

The blood’s plasma is made up of; water, salts, sugar, fat and protein.

Red blood cells (erythrocytes) ;

Around 40-45% of the blood’s volume is made up of red blood cells. These cells have no nucleus, making it easy for them to change shape, allowing them to move swiftly through the veins and arteries.

Red blood cells contain hemoglobin (a protein) that carries oxygen from the lungs, to the rest of the body, and returns carbon dioxide to the lungs – where it is then exhaled.

White blood cells (leukocytes) ;

White blood cells make up only 1% of the blood volume, and are responsible for protecting the body from infection. There are five types of white blood cells, known as;

Monocytes – These have a longer lifespan than most white blood cells, and are used to break down bacteria.

Lymphocytes – These cells create antibodies, allowing the body to fight against bacteria, viruses, and any other potentially harmful bodily invaders. There are two types known as B cells ( cells that produce antibodies) and T cells ( Cells that regulate immune cells, and target infected cells and tumors).

Neutrophils – These are the most numerous types of white blood cells, and are responsible for killing and digesting bacteria and fungi. Neutrophils are the body’s first line of defense when an infection strikes.

Basophils – These are the smallest of white blood cells, and are responsible for sounding an alarm when potentially infectious agents invade the blood. These cells also secrete chemicals in response to alarm, and help control the immune system.

Eosinophils – These cells attack and kill parasites, cancer cells, and aid in allergic responses.

Platelets (thrombocytes) ;

Platelets are cell fragments that are essential for the blood clotting process. Platelets stick to injured blood vessel linings, to provide the basis for a clot – which stops bleeding and promotes healing.

Types of injury

For this task, I have researched in to the different types of injury our body’s can endure, their technical terms, and the causes and signs for each different injury. This will help ensure I am using the correct technical terms when studding wounds, and designing my final Special Effects Makeup look.

Warning – This document contains images of real injuries, that some people may find upsetting.

Open wounds

Many injuries can lead to open wounds. There are four main types of open wound, known as;

Abrasion – Caused when the skin rubs or scrapes against a rough surface. This causes minimal bleeding. May be caused by falling/ tripping over, or walking into something.

Laceration – A deep cut or tearing of the skin, that can cause mild to rapid and extensive bleeding. May be caused by cutting oneself on an object.

Puncture – A small hole caused by one becoming impaled by a long or pointy object. These injuries may not bleed much but can penetrate deep enough to cause external damage to nerves, blood vessels, and internal organs. This may be caused by shrapnel, or falling on to an object.

Avulsion – A partial or complete tearing away of the skin and tissue, causing heavy and rapid bleeding. This may be caused by an explosion or gunshot.

Internal injury

Internal injuries may also occur, mainly after these two main types of incident;

Blunt force trauma – Happens after a body part collides with something else, causing blood vessels to tear and/ or crush. This may be caused by a car accident, physical assault, or a fall.

Penetrating trauma – When a foreign object penetrates the body, tearing holes in the blood vessels. This may be caused by a gunshot, stab wound, or falling on to a sharp object.

The term internal injuries describes injuries that occur beneath the skin and muscle, these may include;

Vascular trauma – An injury to an artery or vein.

JaypeeDigital | eBook Reader

Organ injury – An injury that affects the use of effectiveness of an organ.

Organ Failure in Patients With Acute MI and Shock Is Prevalent and Rising | tctmd.com

Peripheral nerve injury – An injury that affects the central nervous system.

Peripheral Nerve Injuries - Neurosurgery

Bone injury

Bone injury can also occur, in many different forms. These different types of fractures may cause; swelling, tenderness, bruising and/ or a visible deformity.

Dislocation – When the ends of your bones are forced out of their normal positions, separating them from their joints.

Subluxation – When a bone partially dislocates from its joint.

Stable fracture – Where the broken ends of a bone line up, and the bone is barely misplaced.

Open (compound) fracture – Where the skin is either pierced by the bone, or from the impact that caused the break. The bone may not be visible.

Transverse fracture – Where the bone fractures in a horizontal line.

Oblique fracture – Where the bone breaks in an angled pattern.

Comminuted fracture – When the bone shatters into three or more pieces.

Illustrated comparison of different types of bone fractures

Bruising

Bruising is likely to occur after any kind of injury. There are various types of bruising, including;

Subcutaneous bruising – When bruises occur just beneath the skin.

Intramuscular bruising When bruising occurs in the skin’s underlying muscles.

Periosteal bruising – When bruising occurs on the bones.

Burns

Burns are also a common injury, they are measured in degree, from first to fourth.

First degree burns – Burns that affect only the outer layer of the skin. The site will be red and painful, but will have no blisters.

Second degree burns – Burns that involve the inner layers or the skin. The site will be red, swollen and blistered.

Third degree burns – Burns that destroy all layers of the skin, and begin to affect the tissue below. The site will appear white, or back and charred.

Fourth degree burns – Burns that penetrate through all layers of the skin and tissue, potentially even reaching muscle and bone. These burns will completely destroy nerve endings, meaning the victim will feel no pain.

The body’s healing process – and types of bleeding

For this task, I have conducted research in to the body’s healing process. Understanding this process, and factors that may effect it, will give me an additional insight that will help me create extremely realistic wounds, using Special Effects Makeup- during my final assessment

From start to finish, the body’s healing process can take between two weeks, and three years – depending on the size and severity of the incident.

Applying pressure to a wound helps to stop bleeding by pushing the blood vessels together, slowing the blood flow, and helping clots to form.

When the body is injured, its healing process kick-starts into motion. There are many factors that may vary the speed and effectiveness of this process, which I have documented below.

Hemostasis (Normal healing process)

Hemostasis: Stages and How the Process Stops Blood Flow

When the skin is scraped, cut or punctured, you are more than likely going to bleed. In normal circumstances, within a few minutes – or even seconds – your red blood cells will begin to clump together, and clot, protecting the wound and preventing further blood loss. The blood clots will in time turn to scabs, as they dry.

Once a wound is closed, the blood vessels begin to slightly open, allowing fresh nutrients, and oxygen, access to the blood. Blood borne oxygen is a vital component in this process, and is essential for the wound to heal effectively. White blood cells are responsible for protecting a wound, by fighting infection and overseeing the bodily repair process. These cells may clean the wound, from the inside, sometimes resulting in a clear fluid that may become visible around the site of injury.

Blood cells help to rebuild the new tissue, healing the body back to almost 100% of what it was before. This process may result in scarring that should fade over time.

Thrombophilia (Hypercoagulability – excess blood clotting)

File:3D Medical Animation Thrombophilia.jpg - Wikipedia

Some people may suffer from conditions that cause thrombophilia – meaning the blood clots too much, or too fast/easily.

These conditions can cause serious complications, as clots could develop in important areas of the body (your internal organs), or get stuck in the blood vessels around the body – causing potentially life threatening conditions.

Furthermore, excess blood clotting causes thickened blood, longer healing processes, and skin that is prone to unexplainable bleeding and bruising. When injured, blood clots may block arteries, making their response times slower. Therefore, this condition could cause excessive bleeding.

Hypocoagulability (lack of blood clotting)

On the opposite end of the scale, some may suffer from conditions causing a lack of blood clotting. Hypercoagulability is used to describe blood that does not close enough, or form clots fast enough.

Those that suffer with this condition are at high risk of extreme blood loss. As the blood doesn’t clot enough, it takes much longer for a person’s bodily healing processes to start, meaning even the most minor injuries could cause potentially dangerous amounts of blood loss. This also causes a greater risk of injuries to internal organs, and blood vessels, which in turn could lead to internal bleeding.

Blood loss is an extremely dangerous factor for those who suffer this condition. Having thin blood, means the blood can travel much faster, causing potentially fatal outcomes.

Internal Bleeding

Internal bleeding can be caused by blunt force, or penetrating trauma.

In most cases, internal bleeding leads to life changing, and potentially fatal outcomes.

Internal bleeding can cause; swelling and pain in the abdominal region, lightheadedness/ dizziness/ nausea due to blood loss, ecchymosis (a deep purple coloring of the skin) and extreme swelling.

Skin characteristics

Below, I have documented some research in to a breakdown of the different skin characteristics, including; pigmentation, ethnicity, skin types and under tones.

Pigmentation

All skin types have the same amount of melanocytes – pigment skin cells that are responsible for melanin production – that are responsible for giving the skin its color, and shielding the skin from harmful UV rays. The amount of melanin produced by these cells widely varies.

Fitzpatrick skin tone classification

The Fitzpatrick skin tone classification is a scale that classifies skin (from I to VI), by measuring the amount of melanin production in the skin’s cells. This is determined by the color of the skin, and the effect of exposure to UV rays.

Type I – The skin always burns, never tans, and is extremely sensitive to UV exposure.

Type II – The skin burns easily, but does tan minimally.

Type III – The skin often burns moderately but gradually turns to a light brown.

Type IV – The skin burns minimally, and always tans to a moderate brown.

Type V – The skin rarely burns, and tans very easily to a darker brown.

Type VI – The skin never burns, tans extremely easily, and is of a deeply pigmented color. This type is the least sensitive to UV exposure.

Undertones

Everybody has an undertone in their skin. The undertone is the color underneath the surface of your skin that affects your overall appearance. There are three undertones, known as; Cool, warm and neutral.

Cool undertones are of a bluish color. Usually, those with cool undertones have a blue appearance to their veins, and have blue or gray eyes.

Warm undertones create a golden, peach color to the skin. Usually, those with warm undertones have a green appearance to their veins, and have darker eyes (brown or green).

Neutral undertones create an olive tint to the skin surface. Usually, indicated by a blueish green vein appearance.

You may be able to tell your undertone by the jewelry you wear. In most cases if you suit silver jewelry you have a cool undertone, if you suit gold you have a warm undertone, and if you are lucky enough to pull off both, you most likely have a neutral undertone.

Skin types

Normal – This term describes skin with fine texture, a smooth and supple appearance, with no visible pores, and a flexible surface.

Combination – Combination skin is a term used for skin that falls under two or more categories. Usually this term describes skin that consists of an oily t-zone and chin, but normal or dry cheeks.

Oily – Oily skin describes a shiny, thickened skin with sallow and coarse texture. Those with oily skin are likely to have more visibly enlarged pores.

Dry The term dry skin simply describes skin that locks in moisture. As indicated by its name, those with dry skin will likely have dry, flaky, scaly or rough patches of skin. Those with dry skin will also likely have smaller pores, and are more prone to suffering with broken capillaries and premature aging.

Acne prone – This term describes skin that is prone to breakouts. Acne prone skin can be caused by dryness, or oiliness, and consists of pores that tend to clog easily, making the skin more susceptible to whiteheads, black heads and/or pustules.

Sensitive – Sensitive skin usually affects those with pale skin. Those with this skin type are prone to redness and irritation, as well as suffering with tightness. Products must be chosen carefully for those with sensitive skin, as they are likely to react to harsher, and heavier products.

Mature – Mature skin is used to describe skin that has gone through the body’s natural aging process. Aging leads to a loss of elasticity, causing loose muscle tone and wrinkles.

Dehydrated – Dehydrated skin describes that with normal sebaceous secretions, yet a flaky and tight appearance.

Hyper-pigmented – This term describes skin that consists of visibly lighter or darker patches of skin, due to over or under production of melanin.

Ethnicities

Asian

Asian skin tones are typically depicted as warm, yellow tones. However, making up around sixty percent of the world’s population, skin tones and types are hugely diverse. With tones ranging from fair to dark, and pink, blue or olive green undertones, this ethnicity is one of the most diverse.

Skin ages much slower in the Asian population, compared to the rest of the world, due to excessive amounts of collagen and elastin (keeping the skin smooth and wrinkle free). Asian skin has a thicker dermis – the inner layer of the skin – allowing a larger storage area for collagen and elastin, making it last longer.

Furthermore, a thin stratum – the outer layer of the skin – causes the skin to scar much easier. The stratum acts as a barrier, protecting the skin underneath, meaning a thinner stratum leaves the skin more vulnerable, making it harder to heal. This also makes the skin extra sensitive, making it extremely important to protect, and treat with extreme care.

Excess sebaceous glands – oil glands – cause excess oil on the skin’s surface, causing oily skin, enlarging pores and making it much easier for acne to develop. Acne must be treated with extreme care, due to the skin’s high sensitivity and irritation levels. Factors such as temperature and chemicals can cause extreme irritation to skin with a thin stratum so products must be chosen carefully.

Additionally, Asian skin is prone to losing excess moisture. Trans Epidermal Water Loss causes; dry, itchy, scaly, and cracked skin in affected areas, making it vital to keep the skin hydrated. Moisturizer is an essential step in Asian skin care, and water binding ingredients (such as hyaluronic acid ) should be sought after, in order to keep the skin well hydrated, preventing these reactions.

Asian skin is also known for containing high amounts of melanin, making it prone to pigmentary disorders such as; hyper pigmentation, melasma, age spots and freckles. Wearing SPF is a key factor in preventing these problems, and a strength no lower than factor 30 should be worn on a daily basis.

African American

African American skin varies in tones and shades, from caramel to deep ebony.

Similar to Asian skin, African American skin is also prone to having a thicker dermis, aiding in the prevention of visible aging. Having a thicker dermis allows for higher levels of collagen and elastin, helping prevent viable signs of aging such as; fine lines, age spots, laxity and sun damage.

Scarring occurs more frequently in African American skin types, especially thick, keloid scarring. This is due to larger, more numerous amounts of collagen producing cells – Fibroblasts.

High amounts of melanin in the skin have both positive and negative effects on the skin. On the bright side, those with high levels of melanin in their skin are far less likely to suffer sun damage. However, higher levels of melanin, creates extra sensitive melanocytes, causing the skin to be prone to problematic pigmentation issues and uneven skin tones. This can also make the skin more prone  to dark circles under the eyes, and non-cancerous skin growths on and around the face. Brightening products should be used to target these areas, helping to even the skin tone, and SPF should  always be worn. Even Though these may sound like drastically negative effects, one of the most dangerous cancers – melanoma – can be developed due to the high amounts of melanin in the skin, if not cared for properly. Therefore, SPF should be a key step in anyone’s skin care routine.

White

Light Skin Tones Color Palette

White/light skinned people have a base level of melanin pigmentation in their skin that has adapted to environments with lower levels of UV radiation, meaning they possess fewer melanocytes. This allows for better UV absorption, creating higher amounts of vitamin D, having a positive role in aiding bodily processes like calcium development. Living in areas of higher UV exposure can cause a folate (B9 or B12) deficiency. This can cause higher risk of DNA damage, birth defects and cancers – especially skin cancers. Lighter skin is also at much higher risk of severe sun damage.

Indian

Indian skin tones typically range from golden yellow, to brown – known as wheat-ish.

8 Indian Skin Tone Chart {top Shades With Names}

Much like the other darker skin tones previously mentioned, Indian skin is prone to having a thicker dermis, making the skin prone to tanning, and much less likely to suffer sun damage or burn.

Indian skin contains a high melanin content, due to high levels of UV exposure. To prevent pigmentation disorders, such as; periorbital melanosis – dark under eyes, or perennial melanosis – dark patches around the mouth, that are prone to occur with high melanin contents, SPF (no less than 30) must be worn at all times. Use of brightening products should be encouraged, to help even out the skin tone. Ingredients such as; vitamin C, Kakadu plum, and Curcumin from turmeric, are commonly used in Indian skin care routines, to brighten problem areas.

Oily, acne prone skin is also likely in Indian skin, due to enlarged pores. Vitamin rich, antioxidant products should be used to tackle problem areas.

Those from Southern India are generally darker than those from the North, as they are closer to the equator – meaning they have higher levels of UV exposure. In turn, this makes those from  Northern India much less likely to suffer from problematic pigmentation disorders, compared too those from the South.

Latino/Hispanic

Those of Latino/Hispanic ethnicities typically have a more olive toned skin.

A thinner dermis means that nasolabial folds (fine lines and wrinkles) are much less likely to occur, and from a much younger age than may be expected. To avoid these formations, repetitive and extreme facial expressions should be avoided. Expressions, such as squinting and frowning, cause contractions in the underlying facial muscles. When these movements happen frequently, they are more likely to cause permanent indentations and folds, causing signs of visible aging (wrinkles).

Vitamin and mineral rich products must be used to keep skin hydrated, and maintain a youthful look. A thinner epidermis makes the skin much more prone to dryness, making a healthy skin care routine extremely important.

Latino or Hispanic skin has a typically tanned appearance. Higher levels of melanin occur in the skin due to high levels of UV exposure. SPF products should always be worn to prevent long term pigmentation damage.

European

Typically, those of European descent have much fairer, pale skin.

Lower levels of melanin in the skin, make it prone to more extreme, long term sun damage, and irritation. Paler skin commonly has increased sensitivity to products and temperature change, and is also at high chase of developing rosacea.

Additionally, European skin is also known for having much smaller pores, creating flawlessly smooth skin. This is a huge positive when applying makeup, as it creates an almost perfectly even complexion, allowing the makeup to sit extremely well, and creating a stronger longevity.

However, European skin is infamously more prone to earlier signs of visible aging such as; fine lines, wrinkles and age spots. Therefore, anti-ageing products should be encouraged from a much younger age (late teens) and SPF should be worn at all times, leading to overall, healthier, more vibrant looking skin. It is advised to use makeup and skincare products with inbuilt SPF, for an extra layer of protection.
