Telesis Adhesive

Telesis adhesive is a medical grade, pressure sensitive adhesive – perfect for bonding latex and silicone pieces. This product is especially useful in sensitive and troublesome areas, like the eyes and mouth.Telesis is one of the most popular and widely used adhesives in the industry, due to its incredible strength and durability.

This adhesive is available in three different formulas, fast dry, slow dry and matte lace. When used with the telesis thinner drying time for all formulas is much faster.

The latest addition in this adhesive range, is Telesis 8.

Telesis 8

Once dry, telesis eight’s strength is unsurpassed, and will not damage latex or silicone appliances.

Telesis 8F

Telesis 8F is a fast drying version of this product, making it great for work under extreme time pressures.

Telesis 8S

Telesis 8s is a slow drying version of this product, created to allow a longer working period, which is necessary in high heat and humid environments.

Telesis Matte Lace

Telesis matte lace is a product designed to be ideal for laying hair and lace pieces. This product has been carefully created to ensure it never gets hard or cracks, allowing it to be pliable – meaning it will move with the face. This, along with the fact that this product dries and stays matte, ensures the most natural finish. Telesis matte lace also causes no damage to hair or lace pieces.

Telesis Modifier (thinner)

Telesis modifier is used for thinning telesis adhesive, and/or priming the skin. When applied to the skin as a primer, before Telesis 8, this modifier helps to accelerate the drying time for T8. This product is great as it has a strong hold, however is extremely easy to remove.

Telesis applicator pen

Telesis eight is also available in a pen applicator, making it easy for quick application and touch ups.

Telesis Remover

Telesis silicone remover is a specially designed, non-oily silicone remover. This product will remove silicone and latex appliances, and lace pieces, without causing damage to them, making it an extremely recommended product.

All telesis products are non-flammable, and undergo thorough testing by independent labs, to ensure there is minimal/no risk of dermal irritation and they do not contain any known carcinogens ( a substance capable of causing cancer in living tissue), or cyto-toxins (any substance that has toxic effects on an important cellular function, such as venom or a chemical agent).

Telesis products appear from numbers 4-8, representing their order of market production. There are no differences in the strength or effectiveness of these products however their solids content and solvent type are slightly different, causing slight characteristic differences.

Make-up Artists

Alex Box

Dr Alex Box is an internationally renowned make-up artist who has refined the role of creativity in identity, through beauty and makeup.

Box originally studied fine art, at London’s Chelsea college of Art and Design, before moving her focus into fashion makeup. Her background in art distinguished her from other makeup artists, and her innovative and multidimensional approaches have established her as a creator of a new virtual langage, existing only between body, movement, artistic expression and scientific inquiry.

Her work has named her as a pioneer of beauty futurism, earning her an Honorary Doctorate of the Arts award, from the Solent University, in 2011.

Box is one of the industry’s current most creative artists, best known for her surreal and dramatic looks, created by pushing boundaries and evolving the beauty scene, with her unique exploration into human identity and futurism.

Alex is best known for her position as creative director for Illumasqua, a title that she held for seven years (2008 – 2015). However, she has worked as a key artist with many stars across the industry including;

Designers – Issey Miyake, Chanel, Alexander McQueen, Gareth Pugh and Vivienne Westwood,

Photographers – Nick Knight, Paolo Roversi, Rankin, and Solve Sundsbo,

Musicians – Lady GaGa, Frank Ocean, Michael Stripe and Robert smith,

Choreographers – Wayne McGregor and Akram Khan,

Tech developers – Google, Microsoft and Samsung.

Alex has also hosted a TED talk, where she questions how and why we create content, challenges the social media culture, and encourages viewers to move beyond their ‘prescribed culture’ and explore a much stronger self belief and expression. Furthemore she has collaborated with Rankin on a book, has worked on fashion weeks around the world, and is currently the founding editor of Art and Fashion magazine, King Kong.

Rae Morris

World renowned Make-up artist, best selling author, and creator of the world’s first magnetic makeup brush range – Rae Morris – began her makeup career in a very unique way.

Born in Australia, Rae trained as a hairdresser from age seventeen, and was running her own shop by nineteen. In her very unique tale, Rae’s hair journey took her to the Model of the world pageant, working as a hair stylist for one of the contestants. After hearing commotion, Rae looked across the room to see a judge, Naiomi Campbell’s makeup artist leaving the room, after a fall out over Naiomi’s lips. Naomi caught Rae’s gaze and called upon Rae to “fix her lips.” Soon, the paparazzi were snapping pictures of Rae that were released into the tabloids, and before she knew it, Rae was thrown full force into the Make-up industry.

Upon her return home, Rae sought out Richard Jarah (the most creative Make-up artist of the time, and David Bowie’s personal MUA) to provide her with intense training, allowing her to gain key knowledge and perfect her skill. Before long, Rae was working with Magazines – Vogue, ID, Harper’s Bazaar and Marie-Claire, and Celebrities – PINK, Cate Blanchett, Jessica Biel, Kylie Minogue, Kelly Roland, Hugh Jackman, Miranda Kerr and Cathrine McNiell.

Furthermore, Rae was the longest serving Global makeup director for L’Oreal Paris (2003-2013), and won Australian Make-up artist of the year – four times !, and is the author of multiple best selling books – at her surprise, as she is dyslexic.

Rae also created the first line of magnetic makeup brushes, after being inspired by her makeup clients. Rae had a set of brushes custom made for her use on clients, however began to receive huge amounts of compliments, and many people showed interest in her brushes, and where/how to get them. This inspired Rae to launch her own line of brushes, for the use of hair and makeup artists around the world.

Nick Dudman

Nick Dudman is a British make-up artist, specializing in makeup effects and creature design for motion pictures.

Starting his journey as a trainee to Stewart Freeborn, working on Yoda for Empire Strikes Back, Nick trained hard to become one of the most recognized names in his field. After apprenticing for four years, working on projects such as SuperMan 2, and Top Secret!, Nick was trusted to create Tim Currys ‘Darkness’ look, in Ridley Scott’s Legend.

In 1995, Dudman had his first introduction to animatronics and large scale creature effects, when working on The Fifth Element. Since then, Nick has worked on huge projects such as Star Wars, The Mummy, Batman, the Harry Potter Series, Paddington, Penny Dreadful, The Wheel of Time and Carnival Row.

His extraordinarily hard work across a huge amount of large scale projects have earned him many amwards, including ;

Nominations for BAFTA awards for six of the eight Harry Potter films (winning five), two BAFTA craft award nominations for best makeup for Penny Dreadful (winning one), Three Emmy nominations for Penny dreadful, Two Hollywood Guild of make-up artist and hairdressers nominations for Penny Dreadful, nominations for and Academy awards, and an Oscar. Furthermore, in 2013 Nick was awarded an Honorary fellowship from the Arts University, Bournemouth, and in 2022 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of the Arts from the University of Bolton.

Self-evaluation for UAL; Level 3 diploma in production arts; Hair and makeup – Year 1

Tutorial:

Over this year I feel I have really progressed in my tutorial sessions as I have become more comfortable- in terms of opening up and talking freely to my lecturer and success coach, during 1-2-1 sessions. Therefore, I believe I am using these sessions to the maximum of their purpose and have found them extremely helpful. I also feel our tutorial-based lessons have been an important part of my progression, as they have ensured I have knowledge about things you would not necessarily think about, such things as; domestic abuse awareness training, eco-friendly salon studies, and the PREVENT workshop.

Coursework:

Since the start of this course my confidence has massively grown in this area. In the first unit I struggled to understand what the brief meant; however, I now feel completely comfortable in understanding exactly what is being asked of me and interpreting a brief in my own way. My research and documentation skills have massively grown thanks to the coursework we are given, which has helped me expand my knowledge in important subject areas. I am incredibly pleased with how well my work has progressed thought this last year.

Work experience:

Completing work experience alongside our course has not only helped me build my confidence, but many opportunities have arisen, that may not have been possible for me if I had not studied this course. I am extremely great full for all the opportunities I have been given this year and cannot wait to see what next year brings. Work experience has helped me build my confidence in my work, as well as helping me improve my client communication skills, gain experience and connections, and have an insight into what industry is really like. My favourite work experience activities were probably either working with NARU or teaching at West Hill Park school.

Educational Visits:

I really enjoyed the trips we did this year with college, and think they really helped to build my subject knowledge and gave me a clear insight into the realities of this industry. I particularly enjoyed our trip to Pinewood studios, as not only was it a once in a lifetime opportunity, but we got to speak to someone who has worked in multiple areas of the industry. Talking to her gave me an idea of my ideal career plan and helped me to realize that you do not have to give up on things like family time, to achieve your goals in life.

Competition work:

The focus on coemption work this year has really helped me to build my confidence, and time management skills. I have competed in the world skills commercial makeup coemption and made it through to the second rounds (semi-finals- results to be received). We were also supposed to compete in AHT competitions, but unfortunately this was cancelled as our driver contracted COVID-19. I have really enjoyed the mini in class competitions, and as previously mentioned, think this is an essential part of improving our skills set.

Overall progress:

Overall, I am extremely impressed with how well my work has improved in all areas over the last year. I feel I have built upon all key skills, helping ensure my work meets the industry standard. Therefore, I feel this year has really helped prepare me for progression into my chosen industry.

Expectations for next year:

I am excited to begin our studies in to more of the film and Tv side of media makeup, as this year we have focused more on the theatrical side. I am excited to look further into progression opportunities, complete my university application and have many more trip and work experience opportunities. I hope that by the end of next year I have exceeded my targets and am hitting the industry standard in all the work I produce.

Mood boards and Colour Swatches

For this task, I must create mood boards and a collection of colour swatches, that work towards inspiring my final idea.

The first mood board shows a collection of fantasy makeup looks. I created this mood board to help me visualise how broad this theme really is. This collection of images clearly shows how imaginative one can be, when creating a design for this theme.

Next, I created a mood board and colour swatch palette for each of my initial designs.

First, I created a mood board of my favourite initial design, the stone creature. I especially loved creating this as it helped to really show that even though it may initially sound like a simple concept, so much can be done with it. My mood board clearly represents this as not one of these images looks identical to the next.

Next, I created a second mood board, this time of colour swatches. This helps me explore potential colour palettes, and visualise how I may be able to use harmonising colours to really amplify my look.

Secondly, I created a mood board to further explore my vampire design. Creating this mood board helped to further push me towards creating one of my other designs, although I love the outcomes, I feel all of these look very similar and therefore I wouldn’t be able to do much of my own. Furthermore, most of these looks are built upon a glam makeup, and I really wanted to push myself to my limits in my final assessment, in order to showcase my best work.

This design also has a very simplistic, small colour palette, once again making me believe this look was less suitable for my final project.

Lastly, I created a mood board for my alien design. Once again, creating this board pushed me further towards creating the statue look, as although I love these designs I feel like sci-fi is very much a genre of its own – as previously mentioned in my designs.

Creating a look like this would allow me to use a broad colour palette, however I am really looking forward to working with a smaller, duller palette and using the perfect combination of colours to make the final look pop.

Primary research – survey

To help support my primary research for this task, I chose to create a survey to help me get an insight into what the theme fantasy means to others. This will help me to expand my knowledge on the theme, and potentially consider subjects I hadn’t previously thought of.

Using Microsoft forms, I created a survey asking a range of questions linked to the fantasy theme. Then, I used my social media accounts to share the link, asking my friends, family and followers to complete the survey, helping me expand my knowledge in this area.

Below, I have recorded the results of this survey, and explained what this means for my project.

Question 1 – What does the word fantasy make you think of?

I have created a table to help divide the answers into sections, making them easier to process.

Overall, I am so pleased that I chose to collect my primary research this way as it was so easy to access and evaluate the responses. These responses have had a huge impact on my ideas and have most definitely helped in aiding my research. The results from this survey will be used to help me justify my ideas during the design process of tis project.
